Online EMDR Therapy: Trauma Treatment for International Clients Worldwide

World map concept showing online EMDR therapy connecting international clients across multiple time zones with Dr. Antonio D'Costa in India.
Trauma doesn't respect borders. Neither should your access to treatment. I've been delivering EMDR therapy to international clients via video call for quite a while now — across the UK, Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia-Pacific. This page is your complete guide to how it works, who it's for, and how to start.

You live in one country. Your therapist lives in another. You meet on a secure video call. Bilateral stimulation happens through the screen. Your nervous system does the work — exactly as it would in a clinic room. The research confirms it. My clinical experience across multiple time zones confirms it. And for many people — expats, professionals in cities with limited specialist options, anyone stuck on a waiting list — it's not just effective. It's the only practical route to the trauma treatment they need.

This hub page pulls together everything you need: the evidence, the time zone compatibility, the pricing, the country-specific details, and how to book your first session.

Why International Clients Choose Online EMDR

The reasons vary by country, but five themes come up repeatedly.

1. There are no EMDR therapists where they live. This is especially common in rural areas, smaller cities, and island communities. If you're in the Scottish Highlands, rural New Zealand, the Canary Islands, or a small Canadian town, the nearest EMDR-trained therapist might be hours away — if one exists at all. Online delivery removes geography from the equation.

2. The waitlists are too long. In countries with public health systems — the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand — demand for trauma therapy consistently exceeds supply. NHS waiting lists of 6–12 months are common. Private therapists in major cities often have closed books. Online EMDR with an international provider means you start now, not next year.

3. They need therapy in English. If you're an expat in Spain, an English teacher in Korea, or a professional in Singapore, finding a therapist who speaks fluent English and is trained in EMDR specifically narrows the field dramatically. Processing trauma is vulnerable enough without doing it in a second language.

4. Privacy matters. In tight-knit professional communities — Hong Kong finance, Singapore law, Bali's expat circles — the possibility of encountering your therapist at a social event or through mutual contacts is real. Working with a provider outside your country means complete separation between your therapy and your professional life.

5. The research supports it. McGowan et al. (2021) in BMC Psychiatry found telehealth EMDR as effective as in-person treatment. A 2023 systematic review in Frontiers in Psychiatry — 16 studies, over 1,200 participants — confirmed remote EMDR as a feasible, effective alternative. A 2024 Cardiff University service evaluation comparing online to in-person EMDR across 78 patients found no difference in outcomes, completion rates, or safety.

Countries & Time Zones: When Can You Do a Session?

I work from Goa, India (IST, UTC+5:30). My extended-hours sessions go up to 9:30 PM IST. Here's how that translates to your local time — and when you can book a session.

My scheduling system automatically shows availability in your local timezone. You'll never need to convert IST to your time — it's handled for you.

Two patterns to notice: For the UK and Europe, sessions happen in your morning and afternoon — my afternoon and evening. For Asia-Pacific (Hong Kong, Singapore, Bali, Korea) and Oceania (Australia, New Zealand), sessions happen in your evening — my early-to-mid afternoon. For Canada, sessions happen in your morning — my evening. Every region has a workable window. No one is doing therapy at 3 AM.

Country-Specific Guides

I've written detailed guides for each region — covering local mental health context, access issues, time zone specifics, and what to expect. Select your country below:

Session Structure and Pricing

Transparency first. Here's exactly what sessions cost and what to expect.

First Session: Assessment and Resourcing (60–90 minutes)

Your first full session is longer because we build the foundation properly. We map your history — not exhaustively, but enough to work safely. We build grounding resources. I demonstrate bilateral stimulation on screen so you know exactly what to expect before any processing begins. If you have complex trauma, we may spend multiple sessions on resourcing. This is not delay. It's safety.

$50 (60 mins) or $75 (90 mins). UK clients have the option of £40–50 in GBP.

Regular Processing Sessions (60 or 90 minutes)

Each session includes a brief check-in, bilateral stimulation work on a target memory or theme, and a proper closing sequence so you leave grounded. Some clients prefer 60 minutes ($50); those with complex trauma often find 90 minutes ($75) gives the nervous system room to process fully.

Pricing at a Glance

Frequently Asked Questions

Does online EMDR actually work as well as in-person therapy?
Yes. Multiple studies confirm this. McGowan et al. (2021) in BMC Psychiatry found telehealth EMDR as effective as in-person treatment. A 2023 systematic review across 16 studies and over 1,200 participants confirmed remote EMDR as a feasible, effective alternative. A 2024 Cardiff University service evaluation found no difference in outcomes, completion rates, or safety between online and in-person EMDR. My clinical experience across international clients mirrors this research.
Can you really work with clients across all these time zones?
Yes. I've structured my practice specifically for this. Depending on your location, sessions happen in your morning, your afternoon, or your evening — always within my working hours (up to 9:30 PM IST). For the UK and Europe, sessions are in your morning/afternoon. For Asia-Pacific and Oceania, sessions are in your evening. For Canada, sessions are in your morning. My scheduling system automatically shows availability in your local timezone — you'll never see IST times unless you choose to.
What if I move countries during treatment?
This is one of the hidden advantages of online EMDR with an international provider. If you're an expat or digital nomad, your therapy doesn't get disrupted when your visa changes or your lease ends. We continue working together regardless of which country you're in — as long as you have a private space and stable internet. The time zone shift might change your session window, but we adjust. Many of my clients have relocated mid-treatment and the therapeutic work continues without interruption.
How many sessions will I need?
For single-incident trauma, most clients need 6–8 sessions. For complex or childhood trauma (CPTSD), expect 12–20 sessions. This varies significantly by individual. During your first full session, we'll do a thorough assessment and I'll give you an honest, personalised estimate. There's no minimum commitment — you pay per session and can stop at any time.

Getting Started

The process is simple and pressure-free.

Step 1: Book a 15-minute video consultation. My scheduling system shows real-time availability in your local timezone — whether you're in London, Sydney, Vancouver, or Seoul.

Step 2: We meet on video. You tell me what's happening — in as much or as little detail as you're comfortable with. I explain EMDR, demonstrate bilateral stimulation on screen, and answer every question you have.

Step 3: If you want to proceed, we schedule your first full session. If you don't, no obligation. The consultation is a standalone conversation, not a sales process.

Trauma doesn't wait for the right therapist to open up a slot in your city. You shouldn't have to either.
